Message from Provost Mayo Moran

Dear Members of the 蘑菇短视频 Community:

It is with great sadness that I write to let you know of the passing of the Honourable Michael Wilson on Sunday, February 10, 2019.

Many of you will know Michael and his lifelong connection to 蘑菇短视频 and the University 鈥� he was an alumnus (Class of 1959), the College鈥檚 11th Chancellor (2003-2006), and most recently, the University of Toronto鈥檚 33rd Chancellor (2012-2018).

Michael certainly had an illustrious political and business career, but his contributions went so far beyond that.聽 He brought his warmth and generosity of spirit to everything he did, from the countless convocations he chaired, to the interactions with students, faculty and alumni, to his tireless work for 蘑菇短视频, for the University, and beyond.聽 Among his many contributions to public service, Michael was a courageous and tireless advocate for mental health supports who worked to end the stigma around mental illness.

Michael was an exemplary leader, inspiring those around him with his unique combination of outstanding accomplishment, wisdom and humility.聽 Unsurprisingly, when we launched our 鈥淟eading with Integrity鈥� series at 蘑菇短视频, Michael Wilson was chosen as the first speaker.聽 聽He made a lasting impact on the lives of so many and we are so appreciative to have had his ongoing support. He was often seen at 蘑菇短视频, bringing greetings on behalf of U of T at our Matriculation and Divinity Convocation ceremonies, and enjoyed connecting with fellow alumni and students at events and other gatherings. And behind the scenes, he chaired the 蘑菇短视频 Fund and was signatory on the Provost鈥檚 Leadership campaign for nearly 10 years. He received an honorary degree from 蘑菇短视频 and from the University of Toronto and was appointed Companion of the Order of Canada, one of our country鈥檚 highest civilian honours.

Along with his many accomplishments, his legacy will undoubtedly include his unwavering dedication to students and the advancement of education. He was an exceptional leader, a generous mentor and a friend to so many of us. He will be sorely missed. We extend our deepest condolences to his wife Margie and their family at this difficult time.

The flags at 蘑菇短视频 and the University of Toronto flag will be lowered to half-mast until the day of his funeral. Details of the service will be shared once they are available.

Members of the U of T community can sign a Book of Condolence in the Simcoe Hall lobby this week, starting at 1 pm on Monday, February 11.
